Welcome – It would make total sense if Casarani asked visitors for a secret password before letting them enter. That’s the feeling you get when you walk through the iron gate of the property at no. 443 in Rio’s mansion-rich neighborhood of Joatinga. When taking the old charming elevator to the top of the Mediterranean-style building, it’d be hard to believe that you’re ascending a stunning mansion of four suites lined in marble, wood, glass and mirrors in a modern and minimalist aesthetic. Famous for being one of the few buildings in Rio de Janeiro by the Portuguese architect Fernando Perdigão, who ‘s known for adding Greek Mediterranean references to his projects, Casa Rani became a unique boutique hotel four years ago when a renowned English businessman in the financial sector saw the spot as a potential dream house. He remodeled the space with the help of Francois Dussol, owner of La Suite, a sophisticated boutique hotel in Rio in the same region. Joatinga is where the city’s most exclusive and sophisticated residents — with their low-key, relaxed approach to life — call home. Spread over two floors, the rooms at Casa Rani are spacious, with king-size beds and stunning views of the sea and São Conrado beach. As part of the 70-square-meter master suite, guests can enjoy a private infinity pool lined in black tiles that reflect the tropical fauna of the garden. Below is another pool done in a similar style. All of it is the ideal setting to relax and rub elbows with other wealthy cariocas. The common areas and rooms are like a private gallery — studded with photographs, paintings and beautifully designed furniture — with charming orchids, lilies and overflowing nature from the tropical garden spread throughout. The kitchen, headed by an on-duty chef, turns out the culinary best of Brazil and Rio.
